The Amazing Canal Locks Of The Rhine Main And Danube Rivers
One of the most interesting parts of our river cruise, was watching the Viking Rolf traverse the series of locks that made river travel possible between the Rhine, Main and the Danube. We found it almost mesmerizing.
The Rhine-Main-Danube Canal was finally completed in 1992.
Locks are needed for a variety of reasons; low water, a stretch of rapids or rocks, to allow a boat to move from a higher to a lower water lever or vice versa, or to get around a dam.

Rhine Main Danube Canal
Connecting the Rhine and Danube rivers, the Rhine-Main-Danube Canal is a critical waterway in Europe. It allows shipping to move goods and people from the North Sea to the Black Sea along one waterway and connects Europe from east to west. While being a constructed waterway, it is one of the Great Rivers in Europe.

Serbia’s Plans for a Canal to The Mediterranean
Serbia is planning to construct a 17 billion dollar, 650 kilometer long waterway connecting the Danube River to the Mediterranean Sea. In southern Serbia, the sources of the Morava and Vardar rivers lie only 30 kilometers away from each other. The Morava flows north into the Danube and the Vardar flows south into the Mediterranean. For this reason, Serbia is considering constructing a massive waterway connecting the two rivers, and therefore the Danube and Mediterranean.

Administrated from Agigea, it is an important part of the European canal system that links the North Sea to the Black Sea. The main branch of the canal, with a length of 64.4 km , which connects the Port of Cernavodă with the Port of Constanța, was built between 1976–1984, while the north branch, known as the Poarta Albă – Midia Năvodari Canal, with a length of 31.2 km , connecting Poarta Albă and Port of Midia, was built between 1983–1987.The Canal was notorious as the site of labor camps in early 1950s Communist Romania, when at any given time, up to 20,000 political prisoners worked on its excavation. The total number of people used as a workforce for the entire period is unknown, with the total number of deaths estimated at several thousand. These works were later used in the Carasu irrigation system.
